Advanced Upset Prevention and Recovery (UPRT)
FCL.745.A compliant. Only £1,290.

We run airline and business jet focused upset recovery courses helping to give pilots the skill to recognise and recover from unusual attitudes. From 20 December 2019 a new regulation came into force mandating commercial pilots to have attended and passed this course before starting their first type rating.

Our Advanced UPRT courses in accordance with FCL.745.A, is certified by EASA. We also run Instructor Training Courses for Adv UPRT instructors, again certified by EASA.

Recent history is full of incidents and accidents associated with loss of control of Airline and Business jet aircraft and control either not being regained in a timely manner or not being regained at all. This worrying trend has been identified by the various regulatory authorities and from 20 Dec 19 student pilots will be required to undergo appropriate training.

Currently there is no requirement to give real aircraft training to existing Type Rated pilots. Mandating this training would of course b difficult because there is simply not the training capacity available. We at the British Aerobatic Academy would be interested in helping resolve or at least mitigate the problem.

We have extensive experience working with commercial pilots as a large percentage of our clients are airline or business jet pilots, many very senior. We can offer packages that will be enthusiastically received by line crew and could save your airline millions of pounds. In short, we are offering a real life saver.

We have worked through our prices carefully and believe we are offering the best value for money. We are using the very best aircraft and work hard to keep the prices at a reasonable level. Unlike our competitors, most of our aerobatic students are airline pilots and we would very much like to see our Adv UPRT students return as airline pilots and get to love aerobatic training with us..

The advanced UPRT course  is designed to meet the requirements of Part-FCL 745.A

Course Objectives

  • To understand how to cope with the physiological and psychological aspects of dynamic upsets in aeroplanes;
  • To develop the necessary competence and resilience to be able to apply appropriate recovery techniques during upsets.
  • Emphasise physiological and psychological effects of an upset and develop strategies to mitigate those effects;
  • The recovery techniques used during the course will where possible, be compatible with techniques typically used for transport category aeroplanes.

Theoretical Knowledge

  • A review of basic aerodynamics typically applicable to aeroplane upsets in transport category aeroplanes, including case studies of incidents involving potential or actual upsets.
  • Aerodynamics relevant to the aeroplane and exercises used in the practical training, including differences to aerodynamics as referred to in point (1);
  • Possible physiological and psychological effects of an upset, including surprise and startle effect;
  • Strategies to develop resilience and mitigate startle effect; and
  • Memorising the appropriate procedures and techniques for upset recovery.

Flight Instruction

Exercises to demonstrate:

  • The relationship between speed, attitude and AoA;
  • The effect of g-load on aeroplane performance, including stall events at different attitudes and airspeeds;
  • Aerodynamic indications of a stall including buffeting, loss of control authority and inability to arrest a descent;
  • The physiological effects of different g-loads between -1 and 2.5G; and surprise and the startle effect;
  • Training in techniques to recover from:
    • Nose high at various bank angles
    • Nose low at various bank angles
    • Spiral dives
    • Stall events; and incipient spin
  •  Training to develop resilience and to employ strategies to mitigate the startle effect.

Course details

The course costs £1,290 and takes 2 days but allow 3 so we have some weather contingency. We fly Grob and Extra Aircraft. We start at 0900 on day 1 and aim to complete 5 hours ground school and 1 hour of flying. On day 2 we aim to complete 2 hours of flying as realistically that is the maximum people can do in one day.The third day is a contingency day.

I recommend either Air B & B in Holme (near the airfield PE7 3PX) or Premier Inn, Norman Cross Peterborough

If the above date works for you, please send a deposit of £700 to secure the booking. This is not refundable but because of coronavirus, we are happy to reschedule if events demand it. We do not put you in tbe diary until your deposit is received and it normally takes 3 days from overseas. We will collect the remaining £590 on day 1 by cash or card.

Corona Virus Pandemic

During the Corona Virus pandemic, we are running the ground-school using web conferencing software so that you can do it from the security of your own home.  We will also allocate specific time slot for your flying so that you do not stay at the airfield longer than necessary to further enhance security.
We have remote temperature sensing equipment and if you have a high body temperature, you will be sent home.  Obviously we ask you not to attend if you are suffering from any illness at all.  Do not worry, you will not lose your deposit, we will work with you to reschedule your flying

Terms and Conditions

The course is a pass fail course as mandated by EASA, of course we do not expect you to fail, we have never had anybody fail and before we failed you and potentially destroyed your commercial flying career, we would offer you extra train etc. however we do require full payment before the course starts. We ask for a deposit to secure the booking, normally £700, this is non refundable, because it costs us a lot of money to run our very expensive aircraft and our excellent instructors. We keep our profit margins to the minimum necessary (this is why despite our aircraft being the best, we are still able to charge approximately half the price of our competitors) to give a sound business footing and running courses below capacity is very costly given the very high fixed overheads.

If you are unable to complete the course, we will not refund any part of the course fee. If you airsick in the aircraft, and make a revolting mess, we will expect you to clean it up and if you do not or do not do a proper job, we will clean it up and charge you an expensive but fair price.

If you fail to turn up for an agreed appointment, or turn up in a condition that makes you not fit to fly, we will endeavour to look after you but if the cause is laziness, we reserve the right to charge you to reschedule.

So far in many years of trading, we have never had a single complaint.  We naturally hope to continue this excellent record of service.
